The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is the leading UN agency in terms of providing support for agriculture and rural development, forestry and fisheries. We are recruiting one candidate for work to be performed at the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, located in Budapest, with the following terms:

Job Description

  • The Junior Technical Officer (JTO) will contribute to support countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and particularly provide technical expertise in census/survey design, sampling, metadata development, conduct data and agricultural policy analysis, applying quantitative and qualitative methods, relevant to the regional agrifood system context.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to FAO’s normative work on project formulation, and development of information products related to policy, and agriculture and food security statistics.
  • Collect, review/cross-check and/or analyze relevant agricultural, economic, trade, market, social, environmental, nutrition/food composition and/or gender-related data, statistics and information to support the delivery of programme projects, products, publications and services.
  • Conduct analysis, provide technical input, carry out research and edit/revise technical documents and/or publications, as needed.
  • Participate in the development of improved tools and methodologies.
  • Update databases and web pages, as needed.
  • Contribute to the development of training materials and the organization of workshops/seminars etc.
  • Participate in the organization of meetings, consultations and conferences, the development/production of required materials and the provision of information and assistance to partners.
  • Prepare reports and presentations, document results and recommendations.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Hungarian citizenship at the time of application.
  • Master’s degree or PhD. in statistics, mathematics, engineering/agricultural engineering, economics, agricultural economics, environmental economics or a related field.
  • At least one year of relevant experience in the compilation and analysis of food and agricultural statistics in national or international organizations. PhD degree can substitute for working experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues related to the compilation, validation and analysis of SDG indicators are an advantage.
  • Very good working knowledge of English, spoken and written, with a capacity to write and edit working documents in English.
  • Excellent information technology skills, including in using statistical software for data processing and analysis.

Conditions

  • Duration: Two years full time – non-renewable contract.
