The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is the leading UN agency in terms of providing support for agriculture and rural development, forestry and fisheries. We are recruiting one candidate for work to be performed at the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, located in Budapest, with the following terms:

Job Description

  • The Junior Technical Officer (JTO) will contribute to support countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and, particularly, will assist with the development and implementation of programmes and activities related to the cross-cutting theme of harnessing science, innovation, and digitalization for the benefit of green transition to more sustainable agrifood systems in Europe and Central Asia region.

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the implementation of the Regional Action Plan for the FAO Strategy on Science and Innovation, the Regional Gender Equality Strategy, and the Digital Agriculture programme, with a holistic and systematic approach.
  • Supports the country and regional-level activities to facilitate the process of applying science and evidence, social and technological innovations and digitalisation for integrating context-specific, sustainable and systemic solutions for more efficient, inclusive, and resilient agrifood systems.
  • Assists in collecting and analysing data on science, innovation and digitalization status and trends, specific challenges on regional and country levels as well as collecting innovations, good and promising practices.
  • Contributes, assists in organizing and participates in policy seminars, technical meetings, capacity development workshops and networking activities related to science, innovation, and digitalization activities.
  • Assists in formulation and implementation of regional and country projects related to science, innovation and digitalisation, including the implementation of the Digital Villages Initiative, in programme countries in Europe and Central Asia.
  • Supports mainstreaming science, innovation, and digitalization as a cross-cutting theme in the FAO work programme and accelerating the potential of science and innovation and science-policy interfaces in a systematic manner across Regional, Subregional and Country Offices.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Hungarian citizenship at the time of application.
  • Advanced university degree in relevant areas such as agriculture, environmental sciences, natural resource management, development studies, engineering, IT, or related disciplines.
  • Knowledge or familiarity with scientific and digital advancements and innovations in the agrifood systems would be an advantage.
  • At least one year of relevant experience in governmental agencies, international organizations or research institutes, consultancies, private companies, or NGOs, working with science, innovation, or digitalization. PhD degree can substitute for working experience.
  • Excellent information technology skills, including word processing, presentation software (PowerPoint), spreadsheet application (Excel) and the Internet.
  • Working knowledge (proficient – level C) of English, spoken and written, with a capacity to write and edit working documents in English.

Conditions

  • Duration: Two years full time – non-renewable contract.
