The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is the leading UN agency in terms of providing support for agriculture and rural development, forestry and fisheries. We are recruiting one candidate for work to be performed at the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, located in Budapest, with the following terms:
Job Description
- The Junior Technical Officer (JTO) will contribute to support countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and particularly FAO Regional Priority Programme: “Transforming food systems and facilitating market access and integration” in Europe and Central Asia with a specific focus on promoting the One Health approach contributing to sustainable agri-food systems transformation in the Region.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to FAO’s normative work on project formulation, and development of information products on animal production and health and value addition for improved safety and quality of foods of animal origin.
- Support the country and regional level activities related to sustainable development of the animal production sector, also considering food chain risks, including zoonoses, contaminants and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
- Collect and analyze data and review policy options and approaches on balancing production of foods of animal origin with environmental sustainability, including concerns on GHG emissions and the sustainability of diets.
- Analyze data related to food systems risks and environmental sustainability, which include animal diseases, food borne diseases and AMR.
- Engage in activities promoting animal production, health and food safety, including better nutrition.
- Review the latest science and data on the role of animal origin foods and other protein sources in traditional diets in Europe and Central Asia programme countries.
- Contribute to the sustainable development of food systems with a focus on the One Health approach.
- Contribute to formulation and implementation of capacity development programmes in programme countries of the region, including backstopping missions, and the preparation of training and information materials.
- Assist, participate, contribute and organize seminars, webinars, capacity development workshops and networking activities related to animal production for better nutrition, livelihood development and safety of foods of animal origin.
- Prepare reports and presentations, document results and recommendations.
- Support cross-ministerial and multi-disciplinary actions for the sustainable development of animal production in the context of food systems transformation.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements
- Hungarian citizenship at the time of application.
- Masters degree in agriculture, veterinary medicine, animal science, nutrition, food engineering, food science or related fields.
- At least one year of relevant experience in public institutions and ministries, international organizations, research institutes, consulting companies or NGOs, working with agriculture, food and development. PhD degree can substitute for working experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of issues related to sustainable animal production, nutrition and food safety are an advantage.
- Very good working knowledge of English, spoken and written, with a capacity to write and edit working documents in English.
- Excellent information technology skills, including word processing, presentation software (PowerPoint), spreadsheet application (Excel) and the Internet.
Conditions
- Duration: Two years full time – non-renewable contract.
- Remuneration - salary: HUF 423,000/month (gross amount); monthly salary supplement of HUF 140,000/month (net amount); cafeteria benefits as per the employer’s internal policy.
